CHAPTER FOURTEEN

OLIVIA ARRIVED AT The Midnight Pumpkin, the local pottery studio, just as Hattie addressed a group of people congregated at the back. Among the crowd was Caroline, who hurried to greet her.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Hattie said. “Willoughby’s was kind enough to donate all of these trellises, but we need to make the most of them and have them decorated and assembled by end of day tomorrow. Here are the setup plans. As you already know, we’re going with the painfully simple theme of—”

“Fall!” CeCe Makes hollered from the back of the group.

Hattie threw up her hands, pleased that others were ready to commiserate with her about the boring theme.

“That’s what the committee voted on, so that’s what we’re doing. It doesn’t mean we can’t get creative inside that little box, though. Red, orange and yellow are the colors for the festival, but we can play with textures and dimensions. Remember that.”

Caroline gave Olivia a side hug as Hattie continued directing the group in all things decorating for the Fall Festival. “I’m glad you made it, Liv.”

“What can I help with?”

“Well,” Caroline said, “if Hattie hasn’t already assigned you, I could use help with my display. Sheila has a vision that involves aged shiplap and tulle.”

Olivia admired the studio. “I haven’t been here in ages.”

“It’s a great space to work since it’s so close to where the festival will be. We can store the decorations here and won’t have to transport them far.”

Olivia brushed her fingers over a wooden high-top table that had been painted to resemble Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night painting.

Caroline continued. “How did things go with Micah the other day?”

“Hmm?”

“When he didn’t go to the baseball game. I drove him home, remember?”

Olivia recalled the conversation she’d initiated with Micah over the weekend. Her almost-kiss with Tyler had only been an hour cold when she’d returned to the cottage to find Micah on his way to the woods. She’d stopped him to discuss his behavior at the sandwich shop and had found him so congenial he’d even divulged that he was building a fort for himself in the woods. The conversation hadn’t lasted very long since Micah had easily accepted responsibility for his rude behavior and then quickly apologized. The entire interaction hadn’t lasted more than a minute and had ended with Micah happily trotting off with Boomer hurrying to keep up.

“It was easy—too easy.”

“Oh,” Caroline said. “That’s good, right?”

Olivia watched an employee inventory bottles of glaze on a nearby shelf.

Nothing about her conversation with Micah felt like it had gotten to the root of any problem. If he’d wanted to get her off his back as quickly as possible, he’d said everything needed to do that. He’d been pleasant and polite without a hint of attitude, but it had still left her feeling unsettled. He had come alive at the clinic, working with the puppies, but she never saw that same kind of light in his eyes when he was home...or with her.

“How was the game?” Caroline asked.
